Education in Schools

Introduction

Education is an important part of people’s lives. Education transforms people because it gives people knowledge in different areas such as math, science, history, geography, languages and sports. Education also helps promotes social and political development. Also, educated people are more capable to do jobs and to make smarter decisions in life. 

History of education in UAE

The development of education started in UAE from 1962. Since then, the government has been investing over 8 billion Dirhams in education sector each year to ensure free public education for the citizens, both male and female at every level (UAE Interact , 2016).

Issue

In spite of a booming educational sector, one issue in the education system is cheating. According to Merriam Webster Dictionary (2016) cheating is defined as breaking a rule or law in order to gain an advantage at something. Cheating occurs all over the world. According to Khan (2012), over 80% of students admit to cheating in some form in the UAE.

Types of cheating include:

Traditional cheating: traditional cheating is when students copy from friends during assignments or exams.

E-cheating: due to the growth of technology in the UAE, many students use online resources in their academic work without proper citation or they turn in papers done by others.

Causes of cheating

The act of cheating in education has been increasing especially in higher education due to a number of reasons.

Many students lack organization and time which leads to cheating.

Lack of strict rules and regulations in schools also lead to cheating.

Effects of cheating

Cheating has many bad effects on the youth in the society. By cheating, students will not be able to develop skills for the future. May students will not be able to put into practice what they learnt in their education because of cheating.

An uneducated population leads to a backward society, for example students who are uneducated will not get jobs, which will lead to higher unemployment rates. 

Recommendations

Academic cheating is a serious issue because it affects the integrity of the education system and it leads to a backward community. To overcome these issues, the students need to change their attitude towards cheating. This can be done by educating them from early school days about the bad effects of cheating and the harmful consequences. Furthermore the schools should have strict codes and rules to ensure cheating does not occur. Lastly, parents and guardians should get involved to ensure students have a healthy work life balance.
